Our family enjoys taking cruise vacations, especially when we get the chance to enjoy the service of a premium cruise experience.
We get to visit beautiful locations, including several close to home in the Caribbean.
However, a degree of sameness is making our cruise experience seem routine.
A newer category of cruising has caught my eye.
A few cruise lines are focusing on experienced cruisers (although it’s not a requirement to enjoy these cruises) by offering a combination of new destinations and longer stays in a location.
Most ocean cruises only stay in port between 6 to 8 hours, just enough time to participate in a shore excursion and get back onboard before sailing to the next port.
These newer lines stay longer in the port and may stay overnight, allowing guests to explore beyond the shore excursion.
In addition to the longer stays in port, the itineraries are also longer.
Instead of the standard 7 night cruise, the itineraries offer 10 or 11 night options which gives you the chance to spend more time with the local culture.
Finally, these cruise lines have smaller ships that have 1,000 guests or less onboard.
With smaller ships, you will find a bit more intimate service and a less crowded atmosphere.
A few of these cruise lines are Azamara, Oceania Cruises and Viking Ocean Cruises.
Azamara focuses on giving guests longer stays in a location and their smaller ships allow them access to more ports.
Oceania Cruises has an award winning culinary program with opportunities to shop in a local market with the ships chef or taking a cooking class.
Viking Ocean Cruises offers adult only cruises that encourage learning and enrichment.
Let’s explore which of these cruises would be best for you.
